The Faculty of Education at Akwa Ibom State University
(AKSU) hosted its 1st International Conference, themed ‘Education in a Period
of Rising Insecurity, Kakistocracy, and Economic Downturn,’ Tuesday, November
5, 2024, at the University's Main Campus in Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local
Government Area.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Host of the occasion, Prof. Nse U. Essien, emphasised the essential role of education in societal transformation, stating, “The best way to change society is by education.” He urged participants to have in-depth discussions on strategies to address the rising issue of kidnappings in schools and society, asserting that the conference would provide valuable insights to support technological advancement and professional development. Prof. Essien welcomed the keynote speaker, lead paper presenters, and participants. He expressed delight at the Faculty of Education’s 1st International Conference and encouraged making it an annual event.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Emmanuel E. Ekuri from the
University of Calabar, presented a paper entitled ‘Education as a Beacon of
Hope in Turbulent Times.’ Prof. Ekuri highlighted education as a transformative
force, essential in fostering resilience and stability during socio-economic
and political upheavals. He stressed the role of education in equipping
individuals with knowledge and skills for adaptability, stability, and peace
building.
The Chairman of the conference and former Dean, Faculty of
Education, Dr. Patrick J. Uko, stressed Nigeria’s multi-faceted challenges,
including: insecurity, insurgencies, kidnappings, economic downturn and high
cost of education, all of which he attributed to mismanagement and
kakistocracy, with negative impact on students and educators. He recommended
that education practitioners must proffer solutions to successfully tackle such
issues.
In his welcome remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Education, Dr. Iniobong E. Akpan, said that the conference theme was apt, considering that rising insecurity, economic hardship, and political mismanagement have strained educational systems worldwide. He therefore called on educators, researchers, and policymakers to explore options that will fortify learning and inspire resilience during these challenging times. Dr. Akpan thanked the Vice-Chancellor and AKSU Management for their support with organising the conference.
Lead papers were presented by Prof. Eme Joseph on the theme
‘Education in a Period of Rising Insecurity, Kakistocracy, and Economic
Downturn’ and by Prof. Imo E. Umoinyang on ‘Actualisation of Nigeria’s
