About the Dean
Prof. Sunday Michael Sam is an accomplished academic and researcher in botany, plant physiology, and phytochemistry with over two decades of experience. Currently a Professor in the Department of Botany at Akwa Ibom State University—and recently appointed Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences—he has steadily progressed from Lecturer to Professor, assuming key leadership and administrative roles along the way. Educated at the University of Uyo, where he earned his B.Sc., M.Sc. (Plant Physiology), and Ph.D. (Plant Physiology and Phytochemistry), Prof. Sam has demonstrated excellence in both teaching and research. His extensive academic service includes roles as departmental academic adviser, coordinator for seminar and SIWES programs, and active participation in faculty and senate committees. A notable aspect of his career is his robust editorial and publication record. Prof. Sam has authored and edited eight textbooks and manuals—spanning topics such as plant growth and developmental physiology and applied industrial plant products—which underscore his expertise in curating high-quality academic content. In addition, his prolific scholarly output includes over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous conference papers. These contributions not only reflect his research excellence but also his commitment to shaping and disseminating knowledge in his field. Moreover, his active membership in professional bodies such as the Botanical Society of Nigeria, the American Society of Plant Biology, and the Nigerian Environmental Society reinforces his standing as a key opinion leader. His dedication to mentoring is evident from his supervision of numerous undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students, ensuring the development of future scientists. Prof Sunday M. Sam is current Dean of Faculty of Biological Sciences, Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden.
