About the Department:

The Department of Public Administration was established in the Akwa Ibom State University in 2011/2012 academic year as combined Honours with political science. However, following the National University Commission (NUC) visitation panel and its subsequent report, the department was approved as a separate and autonomous Department in 2012/2013 academic year. The department of Public Administration started with a four-year programme, leading to the award of B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Public Administration. Following the visitation National Universities Commission’s (NUC) panel in November, 2020 and subsequent approval, the Postgraduate programme of the department commenced fully during the 2020/2021 academic session with the following programmes run by the department: Ph.D, M.Sc, MPA and PGD in Public Administration.

Public Administration, as a discipline is designed to provide the students with adequate theoretical, conceptual and empirical knowledge in the study of administrative process and the ways in which the process could be improved.

Philosophy
The department’s academic programme is based on comprehensive excellence in research, teaching, learning and service provision. The underlying philosophy is to produce graduates with a critical mind, requisite ability and skills to analyse, comprehend, predict and influence the factors that shape the administrative processes in public sector in an ever-changing governmental, as well as business environment in a globalized world.

Mission
The motive of teaching and learning public administration is to study the society generally, its administrative process scientifically, not for its own sake, but to arrive at conclusions that should be useful to enrich society and expand its frontiers of development. This is because it is very difficult to develop society, if its administrative, culture and bureaucratic structures are not put in order.  This is the primary objective of the public administration. It is hoped that well-groomed graduates of public administration can provide useful direction for positive movement of the society.

Vision
The vision of the Department of Public Administration is to produce graduates who would prove to be inimitable, quintessence, paragons as well as enthusiastic in making their meaningful contributions to the areas of administration, methods and processes, research, teaching, development and social welfare considered necessary in the understanding of the nature, structure and functioning of man and his society in Nigeria, Africa and world community as a whole.
