PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department of Geology thrives on six core values which includes; integrity, sincerity, team-work, oneness, neatness and excellence (I – Stone). Excellence exhibited by the Geology team earned the department approval to start postgraduate programmes (PGD, M. Sc and Ph.D.) from 2019/2020 session. This achievement was recorded during the PG resource verification exercise. The training in geosciences is in response to the needs of the students, the dynamic nature of the subject, and the needs of the public. Specific knowledge in geology is complemented with the acquisition of the skills and field experience that adequately prepare the graduate not only for employment in both government (geological) establishments and the private sector, but also for self-employment. The training inculcates communication skills, emphasize problem-solving as well as entrepreneurial and information technology skills so as to make the programme relevant to the society, industry and the students themselves.

OBJECTIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT

The objectives of the B.Sc. degree programme in geosciences include:
  1. To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for geosciences and provide them with a broad and balanced foundation of geological knowledge and practical skills.
  2. To develop in students a range of transferable skills and attitudes which are of value in geological and non-geological settings.
  3. To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of geosciences in an industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social development.
VISION STATEMENT
The vision of the Department of Geosciences is to adequately equip the students with sound knowledge and professional skills in geosciences for the acquisition, development and inculcation of the proper value-orientation for their survival and for public benefit.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Department of Geosciences are as follows:
  1. To inculcate in students a sense of enthusiasm for geosciences; an appreciation of its application and relevance in the solution of different  societal developmental problems as well as to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
  2. To develop in students, the ability to apply their geological knowledge and  skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in geosciences.
  3. To provide students with a knowledge and skill-base from which they can proceed to specialized areas of geosciences or multi-disciplinary areas involving geosciences, thus generating appreciation of the importance of geosciences in every sphere of human endeavor.
