Dr. Sunday M. Sam, an Associate Professor of Plant Physiology and Phytochemistry is the pioneer Head, Department of Botany, Akwa Ibom State University. He was born on 21st July, 1976 in Nkek Abak village, Ukanafun L. G. Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Dr. S. M. Sam began his primary education at Qua Iboe Church Primary School, Obot Idim from 1982 to 1987 where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC). His secondary education was at Community Secondary School, Urua Ekpa Enang from 1988 to1993 where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate in 1993. He proceeded to the University of Uyo and graduated with a Second Class (Hons) Degree in Botany in 2000. In 2007 he obtained M.Sc Degree in Plant Physiology and Ph.D Degree in Plant Physiology/Phytochemistry in 2014 from the University of Uyo. 

Dr. Sunday Sam started his Lecturing career at the defunct Akwa Ibom State College of Agriculture, Obio Akpa in 2004. In 2007, he was employed as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, University of Port Harcourt where he worked till 2016 when he was employed as Senior Lecturer in Akwa Ibom State University and he transferred his service from the University of Port Harcourt to Akwa Ibom State University.

Dr. Sunday Sam has taught several courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. He has supervised many B.Sc, PGD, M.Sc and Ph.D students. His research interests are evaluation of medicinal plants as potential source of raw materials for drugs manufacturing, environmental stress physiology, pollution and Bioremediation to which he has made vital contributions to the advancement of knowledge.

He has many distinctions and awards which include Akwa Ibom State Government scholarship for M.Sc studies (2004-2005), Total E & P (Elf Nig. Ltd) scholarship for postgraduate studies (2009 – 2010) and Education Trust Fund (ETF) scholarship for Ph.D studies (2009 – 2012).

He has serve as Departmental academic adviser, coordinator Departmental seminar committee, member community service committee, pioneer post graduate coordinator Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences and Biological Sciences from 2017 to 2021, Departmental SIWES coordinator, pioneer HOD, Department of Botany (2019 till date), member committee for re-invigoratoring Consultancy Services (2018), senate member (2019 till date) and Deputy Dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences (2021 till date). His tenure as HOD the Department of Botany is worthy of note. The Department got full accreditation in 2019. He is an Environmental consultant and has participated in Environmental Impact Assessment job for oil industries, private companies and Government. He has served as external examiner to other Universities and Polytechnics and external assessor of candidates for promotion to the rank of Chief Lecturer in the Polytechnic. 

He has over 50 publications which include 5 textbooks. He is a member of several professional bodies which include Botanical Society of Plant Nigeria (BOSON) and American Society Plant Biology 

 (ASPB).

Dr. Sam is an Elder of the Apostolic Church Nigeria. He is married and blessed with five children.

 Brief History of the Department 

Botany Unit was established in 2010 alongside three other units (Genetics/Biotechnology, Microbiology and Zoology) that comprised the Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences. In 2014, these four programmes were accredited by NUC to award BSc degrees. In 2015, another programme, Marine Biology was later added to the Department of Biological Sciences as a fifth unit making the Department undoubtedly the largest in the faculty if not in the University.

 Full academic work started in the department in October, 2010 and Dr. Etim J. Umana from University of Calabar was appointed the interim Ag. Head of the department by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Sunday W. Peters. He laid a good foundation for the smooth take off of the department. Dr. Umana was later replaced by Dr. Elijah J. Nya as the Ag. Head of the department from the second year of the University existence. He was later replaced by Dr. E. N. Okey in 2015 with the appointment of the new Vice chancellor, Prof. Eno  J. Ibanga.

The Department of Botany was established on 3rd April, 2019 as approved by Senate of the Akwa Ibom State University after a split from the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences which had existed since October, 2010. In 2019, the then Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences was exciting from Faculty of Physical Sciences and Faculty of Biological Sciences. The Department of Botany is under the Faculty of Biological Sciences and Dr. Sunday M. Sam is the pioneer Ag. Head of Department, who is assisted by Administrative, Academic and Technical Staff in the day-to-day running of the Department in both campuses of Ikot Akpaden (Main campus) and Obio Akpa.  

The Philosophy and Objectives of the Department 

Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme which is an offshoot of that of AKSU enshrined in the Akwa Ibom State’s philosophy of Education is to endow our graduates with the good knowledge and sound understanding of the concept and technologies of Botany to meet critical societal needs and pertaining to plant life. All aspects of human existence including food security, shelter, medicines and environmental regeneration once touched by the sustenance of plant biodiversity. Therefore, the student of the programme is exposed to the body of knowledge to meet these needs.

This is in keeping with the National Universities Commission (NUC) statement on Minimum Academic Standards (MAS). In the formation of the curriculum, care has been taken to ensure that the appropriate courses are taught at any given level of exposure. The students are provided with a broad-based exposure to knowledge that produces a well- minded individual, fit to take up responsibilities at the higher-level labour needs of the nation. 

The undergraduate programme leads to the award of Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Botany.


Objectives 

The objectives of the Department are:

·        To advance knowledge in Botany in order to enhance the skills and expertise required for self-reliance and gainful employment.
·        To provide a good academic environment as a necessity in preparing the student for scholarship and service.
·        To educate the student on the importance of “Research and Development” using the concept and technologies of Botany for the development of our immediate community and the Nation; and 
·        To enable the student, acquire knowledge through the broad-based training in relation to the BMAS as required by the National Universities Commission (NUC), thereby making our graduates competitive in various challenges and ventures.
Generally, the overall objective of the programme is to groom graduates with sound understanding of the basic and applied aspects of plant science. These are expected to come out with high prospects of fulfilled careers in relevant aspects of our National economy.

The Department of Botany is one of the Department in the Faculty of Biological Sciences that is designed to give a broad based undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Plant Science
 
MISSION
Our mission is to contribute to national development, self-reliance and unity through the advancement and propagation of scientific knowledge and to utilize same for service to community and humanity.
