The current Head of Department is Engr. Dr. Okon B. Bassey. He is a COREN registered engineer and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE). He has served as a council member and Uyo Branch Chairman of NIStructE from 2001 till date. He had served as the General Secretary of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Uyo Branch from 1999 to 2002. At national level, he served as a member of the Technical and Publications Committee of NSE, Lagos under Prof. Musbau Salau as Chairman. Currently he is the Vice Chairman of the 14^th Nigerian Materials Congress of Materials Science and Technology Society of Nigeria.

He is a distinguished academic with over 18years of lecturing experience. He has held numerous leadership positions in the academic including headship of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Uyo and has provided professional engineering services to several firms including Nigerian Ports Authority, O?baccu Consulting Engineers/Etteh-Aro & Partners etc.

He obtained his PhD from Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria and specialising in Coastal Hydraulics / Water Resources Engineering. Engr. Dr. Okon Bassey is married to Dr. Mrs Victoria O. Bassey. The marriage is blessed with children. The young Basseys are doing well in all areas of endeavours.

AKSU is a young and growing University with a student population of 5,838, studying for full-time degree programs in the 6 faculties. There are 465 academic staff with 36 Professors in various disciplines. There is an active program of staff training to ensure that all academic staff acquire higher degrees, with emphasis on PhD degrees. We place great premium on our quality of teaching and research, and are focused on the expansion of excellence and diversity of our research across disciplines. We believe that the integration of teaching and research must be maintained, if the students are to ultimately benefit from exposure to constantly expanding frontiers of knowledge. In furtherance of our desire to expand the use of ICT in the University, broadband internet access has been extended to fully cover the 2 campuses of the University. The deployment of fibre optic cables in a bid to have a robust intranet/internet connectivity is in progress. The University among other things, deploys software applications to automate most of its processes. The University has an ultra-modern Theatre Arts Studio and a state-of-the-art English language laboratory. We are also collaborating with the Government of Akwa Ibom State to diversify into various commercial agricultural enterprises, to ensure food sufficiency. We will continue to be proactive in meeting the demands of a growing, dynamic and changing community of staff, students and other stakeholders.
