[{"image":"6.jpg","hodName":"Professor Atei Mark Okorobia ","aboutdeptContent":"The Department of History and International Studies of the Akwa Ibom State University was established in the 2012-2013 academic session.It is located in the Obio Akpa Campus of the University. Academic activities formally commenced in March 2013 with a total of thirty three 33 pioneer students and four 4 founding members of academic staff namely Professor Otoabasi Etim Akpan,Dr Joseph Robert Bassey,Dr Asuquo Okon Anwana and Dr Peter Sunday Equere while Mr Richard Bassey Ekpo was the only non-teaching staff.

The pioneer Head of Department Professor Otoabasi Etim Akpan had a very brief tenure in 2013 before his appointment as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

Consequently, Dr Joseph Robert Bassey was appointed as the Acting Head of the Department from August 2013 to 2nd December 2016.
Dr Asuquo Okon Anwana was appointed the Acting Head of Department from December 2016 to 31st July 2018.
At present, there are fifteen 15 academic staff members on ground three 3 of them pursuing their terminal degrees in various universities under the staff development programme .

A senior academic and seasoned administrator Professor Atei Mark Okorobia is the current Head of Department.

The Department runs concurrently a Four-Year Degree for students admitted through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME and a Three-Year Direct Entry DE Programme both leading to the award of the Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and International Studies.

The students population has also grown quite impressively From the original 33 in the 2012-2013 the Department now has 258 in the 2017-2018 session. So far the Department has produced two sets of graduating students, the first set in the 2015-2016 academic session while the second set was in the 2016-2017 session. From the two sets of graduating students the Department has also produced seventeen 17 second class upper division fifty-one 51 second class lower division and two 2 third class degree holders.

Some of these have started making contributions to the development of their communities Local Government Areas States Nigeria and the world.

To provide qualitative education and community service through pragmatic teaching research and learning methods that will enable the students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to solve problems and promote the sustainable socioeconomic and political development of a humane society
