The Department of History and International Studies of the Akwa Ibom State University was established in the 2012-2013 academic session.It is located in the Obio Akpa Campus of the University. Academic activities formally commenced in March 2013 with a total of thirty three 33 pioneer students and four 4 founding members of academic staff namely Professor Otoabasi Etim Akpan,Dr Joseph Robert Bassey,Dr Asuquo Okon Anwana and Dr Peter Sunday Equere while Mr Richard Bassey Ekpo was the only non-teaching staff.
The pioneer Head of Department Professor Otoabasi Etim Akpan had a very brief tenure in 2013 before his appointment as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
Consequently, Dr Joseph Robert Bassey was appointed as the Acting Head of the Department from August 2013 to 2nd December 2016. Dr Asuquo Okon Anwana was appointed the Acting Head of Department from December 2016 to 31st July 2018. At present, there are fifteen 15 academic staff members on ground three 3 of them pursuing their terminal degrees in various universities under the staff development programme .
A senior academic and seasoned administrator Professor Atei Mark Okorobia is the current Head of Department.
The Department runs concurrently a Four-Year Degree for students admitted through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME and a Three-Year Direct Entry DE Programme both leading to the award of the Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and International Studies.
The students population has also grown quite impressively From the original 33 in the 2012-2013 the Department now has 258 in the 2017-2018 session. So far the Department has produced two sets of graduating students, the first set in the 2015-2016 academic session while the second set was in the 2016-2017 session. From the two sets of graduating students the Department has also produced seventeen 17 second class upper division fifty-one 51 second class lower division and two 2 third class degree holders.
Some of these have started making contributions to the development of their communities Local Government Areas States Nigeria and the world.

Professor Atei Mark Okorobia was born on the 5th of March, 1962 in Bayelsa.
He began his Educational journey with Seventh-day Adventist Primary School, Abule-Oja, Yaba-Lagos State, Nigeria, where he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate in 1975.
He then proceeded to Nembe National Grammar School, Nembe, Bayelsa State, Nigeria where he bagged his West African School Certificate in 1980.
He later proceeded for his tertiary education in the University of Port Harcourt, River State, where he obtained a Bachelorís Degree in History, in 1986.
His quest for knowledge propelled him to go for his masters and Ph.D degrees in the same university where he obtained M.A in History in 1989 and Ph.D History (African History with emphasis on the Niger Delta) in 1999.
His area of academic specialization is in African History and Afro-American History and Slave Trade Studies.
His outstanding academic performance got him a scholarship from, 1978-1980.
He is a recipient of several prestigious academic awards such as Best Graduating Student in History, (1985/86 Session). University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.
Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Humanities, (1985/86 Session), University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria; in the same University, just to mention a few.
He was also on the Deanís List of Academic Excellence from 1982/83 to 1985/86 academic sessions.
He is a Fellow, Institute of Corporate Executives of Nigeria (ficen) since 2000.
He is an Associate Member, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (anipr) since 2000
He is also in WHO IS WHO IN BAYELSA STATE, NIGERIA (2nd Edition, 1997)
He has other numerous awards and recognitions within and outside Nigeria.
He is a sort-after resource person in Local and International workshops.

We are also collaborating with the Government of Akwa Ibom State to diversify into various commercial agricultural enterprises, to ensure food sufficiency.
