The Department of History and International Studies of the Akwa Ibom State University was established in the 2012-2013 academic session.It is located in the Obio Akpa Campus of the University. Academic activities formally commenced in March 2013 with a total of thirty three 33 pioneer students and four 4 founding members of academic staff namely Professor Otoabasi Etim Akpan,Dr Joseph Robert Bassey,Dr Asuquo Okon Anwana and Dr Peter Sunday Equere while Mr Richard Bassey Ekpo was the only non-teaching staff.

The pioneer Head of Department Professor Otoabasi Etim Akpan had a very brief tenure in 2013 before his appointment as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

Consequently, Dr Joseph Robert Bassey was appointed as the Acting Head of the Department from August 2013 to 2nd December 2016.
Dr Asuquo Okon Anwana was appointed the Acting Head of Department from December 2016 to 31st July 2018.
At present, there are fifteen 15 academic staff members on ground three 3 of them pursuing their terminal degrees in various universities under the staff development programme .

A senior academic and seasoned administrator Professor Atei Mark Okorobia is the current Head of Department.

The Department runs concurrently a Four-Year Degree for students admitted through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME and a Three-Year Direct Entry DE Programme both leading to the award of the Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and International Studies.

The students population has also grown quite impressively From the original 33 in the 2012-2013 the Department now has 258 in the 2017-2018 session. So far the Department has produced two sets of graduating students, the first set in the 2015-2016 academic session while the second set was in the 2016-2017 session. From the two sets of graduating students the Department has also produced seventeen 17 second class upper division fifty-one 51 second class lower division and two 2 third class degree holders.

Some of these have started making contributions to the development of their communities Local Government Areas States Nigeria and the world.

To provide qualitative education and community service through pragmatic teaching research and learning methods that will enable the students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to solve problems and promote the sustainable socioeconomic and political development of a humane society

        Dr. Emmanuel Jerome Udokang hails from Nto Edino in Obot Akara LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He attended St. Mary’s Primay School, Nto Edino I and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1986. He later obtained his Senior Secondary Certificate from St. Joseph Major Seminary in Ikot Ekpene in 1992. He later obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy in 2000; Masters of Arts in Philosophy in 2002; all in the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. In 2006, he received in Ph.D in Philosophy. Dr. Udokang has 18 Foreign and Local Journals; 4 Foreign and Local Book Chapters and 1 Article in progress. He is a member of some professional bodies such as Member, Nigerian Philosophical Association, just to mention a few. He has several academic awards and he is well respected in the academic sphere. Dr. Udokang enjoys Playing football, Singing and playing musical instruments, Reading and writing, at his leisure time. He is currently a senior lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies. He is happily married with 4 children.

        Dr. Iniobong Daniel Umotong hails from Ibio in Etim Ekpo LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He started his Educational pursuit in Q.I.C Primary school, Ibio in Etim Ekpo LGA of Akwa Ibom where he got his First School Leaving Certificate. He then proceeded to the School of Basic Studies in Akampka, Cross River State, Nigeria to obtain his Secondary School Certificate in 1984. He later received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1992 from the University of Calabar, Cross River State. He also obtained a PGD in Management in 1997; A Masters of Arts in Philosophy in 1998; and a Ph.D in Philosophy in 2003, all from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. He is currently a Senior Lecturer with the Department of History and International Studies. Dr. Umotong has a total of 32 Foreign and Local Published Journals, Books and Book Chapters to his credit. He also has 3 unpublished works. He is a Member of Nigerian Philosophical Association as one of his Professional memberships. He also has several Post Graduate supervision and Research experience. At his leisure time, Dr. Umotong enjoys Tennis, Chess, Scrabbles and other fun hobbies. He is happily married with 3 children.

        Professor Otoabasi Akpan hails from Ibiaku Itam I in Itu LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. In his academic pursuit, he has obtained:

        • Bachelor of Arts in History of Ideas from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria in 1984
        • Masters of Arts in History of Ideas, from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1986
        • Masters of Science in International Relations and Strategic Studies from the University of Jos, Nigeria in 1990
        • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 2004. Professor Otoabasi Akpan is a well-respected academia with numerous publications, conference and seminar papers and research projects to his credit.
        At his leisure, Professor Otoabasi enjoys Reading, Writing, Travelling and Snooker game. He is happily married with 4 children.

        Dr. Ubong Essien Umoh is an indigene of Anua Offot, in Uyo LGA, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. His academic education is as follows: 1. B.A (Hons) History and International Studies from the University of Uyo, Nigeria in 2004 2. M.A in Military and Strategic Studies from the University of Uyo, Nigeria in 2010 3. Ph.D in Military History from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, Nigeria in 2015. He has received several Awards and scholarships during his academic pursuit and career. He has 2 Thesis/Dissertations; 15 Journals; 14 Book Chapters; and 11 Conference Papers to his credit. He is a member of several prestigious Professional bodies such as Member, Society of Military History just to mention a few. He is currently an adjunct Lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies in Akwa Ibom State University. He is has held several positions within the University Community in giving back as community service to his community. He is happily married with 3 children.

        Dr. Asuquo Okon Anwana hails from Udung Uko LGA in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He began his Educational pursuit in Methodist School Akani Obio, in Oron LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1972. He obtained his G.C.E O’Level and Advanced Level Certificate in 1978 and 1983 respectively. He bagged a B.A (Hons) in History in 1992 and an M.A in History in 1996, all from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. He furthered his academic pursuit to obtain a Ph.D in History in 2003 from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. For his hunger for knowledge, he returned to the University to grab a second degree in Law and obtained LL.B (Hons) in Law in 2002 and was called to the BAR in 2005. He is currently a Lecturer I in the Department of History and International Studies in Akwa Ibom State University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom. It is also worthy to mention that he was a one-time Executive Chairman of Udung Uko LGA of Akwa Ibom State from 2008 to 2011. Dr. Anwana has several Academic Publications to his credit. He has bagged several prestigious awards and is a member of numerous professional bodies such as Fellow, Certified Institute of Management (FCIM), just to mention a few.

        Dr. Romokere Mgbowaji Benson is an indigene of Ataba town in Andoni LGA, River State in Nigeria. He obtained his First School Leaving certificate from Community Primary School II, Ataba, Andoni, River State. He attended Government Comprehensive Secondary School, Ataba, Andoni, River State, where he obtained his Senior Secondary Certificate. He later got admission into the University of Port Harcourt, River State, to study History, where he obtained B.A in History. He got his M.A and Ph.D in History, all from the University of Port Harcourt, River State. He is currently a Lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies. He has several publications to his credit and has attended several academic conferences, He is a member of Historical Society of Nigeria. At his leisure time, Dr. Benson enjoys travelling, Reading and Writing. He is happily married with 3 children.

        Dr. Ikechukwu Cosmas Ahamefule is an indigene of Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo State, Nigeria He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in History and International Relations; his Masters of Arts in History and International Relations and Ph.D in History and International Relations, all from the Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State, Nigeria. He was previously a Lecturer with Abia State College of Education and served also as the Special Assistant to the Deputy Speaker of the National House of Representatives, Nigeria. He is currently Lecturer II in the Department of History and International Studies, Akwa Ibom State University, Nigeria. He has several Publications to his credit and in his leisure time, Dr. Ikechukwu enjoys Reading and Football.

        Dr. Miriam Stephen Inegbe was born in Calabar, Cross River State. She attended Christ The King School, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate. She went ahead to Immaculate Conception College, Itak, Akwa Ibom State where she obtained the Senior Secondary School Certificate. Between 1997 and 1998, Dr. Miriam a Diploma in Theatre Arts and a Certificate in French, all from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom. She went ahead to obtain her B.A (Hons) in French Language, Culture and Civilization from the University of Uyo. She went ahead to get her Masters of Arts in Phonetics and Phonology (French) at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria in 2006. She returned to the University of Uyo, to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. She is currently an Assistant Lecturer in Akwa Ibom State University, Nigeria. She has several Researches, Articles in Journals, Articles in Books and Published Books to her credit. She is Married with Children.

        Dr. Susanna Udoka hails from Ikot Idem Udo in Obot Akara LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She obtained her First School Leaving Certificate in 1970 from Holy Child Covent School, Anua, Uyo LGA, Akwa Ibom. In 1975, she obtained her West African School Certificate from Loreto Girls Grammar School, Abak LGA in Akwa Ibom. She later obtained her first degree, B.A (Hons) English and Literary Studies in 1981 and later in 1989, she obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Education, all from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. In 2000 she got her M.A in English and a Ph.D in English in 2008 all from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English in Akwa Ibom State University, Mkpat Enin LGA, Akwa Ibom. Dr. Susanna has to her credit; 6 Published Text Books, 13 National and International Journals, about 8 Papers Presentations, several Updates and Book Chapter Contributions. She belongs to several recognized Professional bodies such as Association of Nigerian Authors, just to mention a few. In her leisure time, Dr. Susanna enjoys reading, writing and travelling, amongst others.

        Dr. Kingsley Lazarus Uwa hails from Etim Ekpo LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He obtained his First School Leaving Certificate from Government Primary School, Utu Etim Ekpo in Etim Ekpo LGA, Akwa Ibom State. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. He later proceeded to the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he obtained an MBA and Ph.D, both in Business Management. He has been a part-time lecturer in the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osura in Ikot Ekpene LGA and was also a Councilor serving his Ward in the Etim Ekpo LGA Council. He is currently a Lecturer II in the Akwa Ibom State University, Akwa Ibom. He has several publications to his credit and he’s a member of some professional bodies such as Nigerian Institute of Management (MNIM-Chartered), Institute of Operational Research of Nigeria, just to mention a few. At his leisure, Dr. Uwa loves Reading, Football and Dancing.
