Chemical Dept Visits PH Refinery

The industrial excursion consist of 65 students (100 - 500level) and 5 staff.

The team was led by the Head of the Department, Engr. Dr Rasheed Babalola and the Dean, faculty of Engineering, Engr. Prof. Aniedi Ette.

Staff of PAD of Port Harcourt refinery, Mrs Terila and Mr Felix Ejuvweke addressed the team After which a documentary on the history of the company as well as refining processes and its various operations are showed to the team by Engr. Uzubu, the Chief operator of Area 3, the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit of the refinery.

The interactive session was followed by a full factory tour to physically see both the first refinery in Nigeria and the last with production capacities of 60 and 150 BPSD respectively.

The team were privileged to see the operations facilities / equipment most of which have been taught to the students in the classroom.

The equipment seen in the plant includes distillation column, desalting unit, heat exchangers, control room, water treatment plant, fractionating column, spherical and cylindrical tanks for storage of crude oil, intermediate and finish products are stored including LPG.

Others are fire fighting equipment, Gas and Steam turbines for electricity generation, Pipelines, Pumps, Valves, Heaters Etc were shown and detailed usage explained.

Thereafter team were avail the opportunity to have an interactive session with the Managing director, Engr. Abba Bukar.

The MD in his address encourage the students to study hard so as to get prepared to take over the piloting the affairs of the oil and Gas industries in the nearest future after which they must have completed their studies.

He said the visit will helped to bridge the gap between theory and practice because student have had the opportunity to see about 90% of the unit operations.

Lastly, The Head of Department, Engr. Dr. Rasheed Babalola thanked the management for such an opportunity granted to the student and also appeal on behalf of the students, seeking for SIWES slot. He appeal to management to considered accepting some of his students for SIWES programme. He then handed over some Applications letters to the MD for consideration. The MD however accepted the letters and promised to do his best in ensuring that the applications are treated according available slot

The Dean, faculty of Engineering, Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. Aniedi Ette gave a vote of thanks.He thanked the management of Port Harcourt refinery for their magnanimity for granting the team the visit even with a short notice.

The team were given the company's news letters and other documents after being treated to light refreshment.
