MR. JOHN EDEDET UDO

PROFILE OF MR. JOHN EDEDET UDO, FIPOM, FIIA, MNIM, MAUA REGISTRAR, AKWA IBOM STATE UNIVERSITY

Mr. John Ededet Udo was born on July 29, 1956 at Mbierebe Obio in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He started early in life to show brilliance by making Distinction in the First School Leaving Certificate Examination in 1969. At Lutheran High School, Obot Idim where he underwent his secondary education, he finished with Division one in the West African School Certificate Examination in 1975. Mr. Udo is a seasoned University administrator. He started his career in the University system as an Administrative Assistant in charge of Academic Planning in January 1984 at the erswhile University of Cross River State (currently University of Uyo) and rose to become the Registrar of the University of Uyo on December 14, 2005. On completion of his tenure as Registrar on August 31, 2011, he proceeded on a one year sabbatical leave at Federal University Lafia, Nasarawa State. In that University Mr. Udo employed his wealth of experience in assisting in the commencement of the young institution by heading a Committee on staff training through which he organized workshops and seminars to equip all categories of staff for the work of the new University. He also headed a committee that produced the Service Charter. He vetted the draft Strategic Plan, Academic Brief, Staff Conditions of Service and Student Information Handbook. He set up the Directorate of Academic Planning and facilitated the establishment of a branch of ANUPA. In the middle of his sabbatical year, he was appointed pioneer Registrar, Evangel University, Akaeze, Ebonyi State but he had to wait and complete his sabbatical appointment before assuming duty on January 03, 2013. Six months to the completion of his first tenure, he was offered appointment as Registrar of Akwa Ibom State University and assumed duty on July 4, 2016.

Mr. John Udo is a product of two outstanding first generation Universities in Nigeria, namely University of Benin where he obtained the Bachelor of Education (Science) degree in Physics in 1983 and the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where he obtained the Master of Arts (Education) degree in Educational Planning in 1988.

In 2005 Mr. Udo represented ANUPA at Warwick University in England at a Conference and Exhibition of the Association of University Administrators and in 2009 he went on Exchange Programme at Southampton Solent University in the United Kingdom. In 2012, he participated in the International Conference of Registrars at Dubai in the United Arab Emirate. He is an Honorary Member of the Research Board of Advisers of the American Biographical Institute, USA.

In University of Uyo, he was involved in the preparation and presentation of the University Law through the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice, Presidency up to the Federal Executive Council (FEC); he was personally present at the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in 2010 in the company of the then Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education to present the University of Uyo Bill. He made a case for Registry staff to go on sabbatical leave, beginning with his predecessor in office Ė Mr. P. J. Efiong. Before he finished his tenure, a minimum of 5 (five) administrative staff members benefitted from exercise; he was the 6th beneficiary. During his tenure, enough degree certificates were printed for the first time and graduates from the University were able to collect their certificates immediately after convocation; he personally coordinated the printing, calligraphy and distribution of the certificates. Annual Appraisals were handled as and when due and there was no backlog of promotion cases. Due process was followed in all cases of award of contracts. As Secretary to Council, Senate, Congregation, Statutory Committees, all meetings were held as per the provision in the Law and minutes and all papers were ready in time. He initiated the building of a strong room as an extension of the Registrarís Office for the storage of essential documents of the University. He jointly established a branch of ANUPA at the University of Uyo, served as Pioneer Secretary, and later as its Branch Chairman. He initiated monthly presentation of papers by members at meetings of ANUPA. The University had 95.5% of its academic programmes accorded FULL accreditation status partly due to his involvement armed with his long experience in academic planning. During his tenure, in-house training workshops and seminars were organized regularly for all categories of non-teaching staff in the University. He canvassed vigorously for the adoption of the Directorate System in the University which resulted in the inclusion of the post of Registry Director in the Reviewed Conditions of Service of 2011; the actual appointment of Deputy Registrars to the position of Director took place after his tenure. He also canvassed for increase in the number of persons holding the position of Deputy Registrar through the promotion of Principal Assistant Registrars, many of whom had stagnated for a long time; that effort also yielded fruit after his tenure.

Mr. Udo has served as a resource person for the appointment of many Registrars and Deputy Registrars in various universities in Nigeria. He has sat on many Councils and Committees including the National Examination Committee and the Nigeria National Committee of the West African Examination Council.

This seasoned administrator is a member of many professional bodies among which are: Forum of Academic Planners of Nigerian Universities (FAPNU), Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPMN), National Association of Educational Administration and Planning (NAEAP), Association of University Administrators (AUA) based in the United Kingdom, Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU), and the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA) where he was the National President (2002-2006). As National President, Mr. Udo inaugurated the Branches of ANUPA at Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, the National Institute of Nigerian Languages, and resuscitated the University of Calabar Branch. His Executive Committee initiated work on transforming ANUPA into an Institute for regulation of administrative practice in Nigerian tertiary educational institutions; the current Exco is running with that vision. His Executive Committee grouped Nigeria Universities into eight zones for the purpose of effective training. That National Executive Committee led by Mr. Udo introduced the maintenance of the National Register of Members and the issuance of Membership Certificates (he was rightly assigned Membership No. 0001). He is a Fellow, Institute of Practitioners in Work Study Organisation and Methods (IPOM), Fellow Institute of Industrial Administration among others.

Mr. Udo has been a resource person at many conferences, seminars and workshops and expresses a deep interest in raising a new generation of competent university administrators within and outside Nigeria.

In spite of his crowded schedule, Mr. Udo still finds time to engage in community service and propagation of the Christian faith. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship, a body he served as National President for four years. He is also a member, Board of Trustees of Africa Vision Tract House, and also a member of the Board of Trustees, Victory Chapel, University of Uyo (an Interdenominational Christian Community). He is a minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He is also a member and immediate past Chairman of the Board of Governors, Redemption Academy, Obio Etoi, Uyo. He is the Chairman of Uyo Area Council of Nigeria Fellowship of Evangelical Students (NIFES) and currently a member of the Governing Council of NIFES.

Mr. Udo is married to his heartthrob Mrs. Agnes John Udo, herself a Director in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service. The marriage is blessed with four children - three sons and one daughter. He is currently the Registrar of Akwa Ibom State University. This astute administrator has served as Registrar of a Federal University, a Private University and a State University.
