Profile

I joined the University in February 2012 as a Graduate Assistant, and I have been promoted duly to higher lecturing positions since after my Ph.D. I did my Ph.D. in the School of Life Sciences, University of Essex, Colchester, United Kingdom. I majored in the molecular Biology of picornaviruses, a large group of medically important RNA viruses. These include the parechoviruses, which are implicated as one of the causes of sepsis in neonates, enteroviruses like polioviruses, the causative agents of paralytic poliomyelitis, and rhinoviruses which can cause several flu cases in humans.
Currently, my research interests focus on bacteriophages and their therapy as an alternative to antibiotics. I am researching phages against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Listeria monocytogenes, which are bacteria of medical importance and have gained resistance to conventional antibiotics. The aim is to give a better understanding of phages and cells lysis. This knowledge will provide insights that may facilitate the design of effective bacteriophages in the form of medication and other antibacterial agents.
I am a member of the International Society for Viruses of Microorganisms, Nigerian Society for Microbiology, Royal Society of Biology and  Microbiology Society UK, which gives me current information in my research field and encourages growth and collaborations.
