Dr. Essien Ukpe Ukoyo Ukpe is the current Head of Department of Political Science. He assumed the Headship of the Department in October 2020. Dr. Ukpe is a Senior Lecturer. He holds a Ph.D in Political Science from University of Uyo. He also holds other positions of responsibility in the University system including: 
1. External Examiner for Undergraduate Degree Examinations for Department of Political Science and Public Administration, University of Uyo (2019/2020, 2020/2021 & 2021/2022 Sessions). 
2. Postgraduate Coordinator, Political Science Department, Akwa Ibom State Univerity (2018 to date).

1. 2013 Florida Political Science Association (FPSA) Best Graduate Student Paper Award Winner for the presentation of paper titled “The Arab Connection and the Upsurge of Insurgency in Africa: A Case Study of Boko Haram in Nigeria” at the 2013 Florida Political Science Association Conference & Annual Meeting held at the Florida International University in Miami, Florida on March 16, 2013, 
2. Faculty Honours Roll: Placed on Honours Roll of the Faculty of Social Science, University of Uyo (1987/88 and 1988/89 Session) For Excellent Academic Performance.
