The Department of Mass Communication took off in the 2012/2013 academic session under the headship of Dr. Church S. Akpan, and Associate Professor of Mass Communication, with an initial student enrollment of forty-eight. Other pioneer lecturers were Dr. Nicholas Nwankpa (Lecturer I), Miss Philomena Umoren (Assistant Lecturer) and Miss Emem Ekanem (Assistant Lecturer). The department provides teaching, research and consultancy services in all areas of mass communication, including print journalism, broadcasting, advertising, public relations, development communication, film, on-line journalism, among others. At present, the department runs a four-year B.A. degree programme and three year direct entry programme in Mass Communication. However, plans are afoot to mount PGD, M.A, and Ph.D programmes in Mass Communication when the University sets up a Postgraduate School.
To offer a Mass Communication Programme that competes favourably with the best both within and outside Nigeria; to keep aflame the pursuit of knowledge, excellence and the spirit of enquiry; and to offer opportunities for learning, leadership, service and self actualization to both the students and the society at large.
The mission of the Mass Communication Department is to train students who are media-literate and skillful in Information and Communication Technology (ICTs). Also, the programme imbues in the students the ability to be knowledgeable in both the theory and practical aspects of Mass Communication.
The broad philosophy of the programme is to turn out graduates who are well-groomed in every aspect of Mass Communication as a field of study and as a profession. It is one of the core obligations of the programme to produce mass communication graduates who can write well, speak clearly and defend the best usage of words. In the end, what we intend to graduate are faithful stewards of the trust reposed in our profession.
