1.Introduction/Historical Development of Marine Biology Department

Marine Biology department was introduced in 2010/2011 session. Marine Biology is a four-year structured programme consisting of 141 credit hours. The programme is focused on the structural and ecological aspects of fauna, flora and microbial constituents of the marine environment. Apart from general courses in sciences, foundation courses in General Oceanography, Computer applications, Statistics, Biological Techniques and Fish Population Biology will also be taught. The students will be able to assess the composition, concentration and chemical dynamics of estuarine, coastal and policies regulating the maritime environment. Research projects and Seminar presentations are additional prerequisites for a successful completion of the programme. It is also expected that the students in the programme MUST have the ability to swim to a level of personal survival, hence the inclusion of water survivals as a foundation course. The main research focus for the department is on climate change in the marine system, mangrove areas and coastal area.
The Degree programme is appropriate because it will interface with research, industries and relevant organization which also has related mandate. The programmes will enhance interdisciplinary research that will adequately describe, understand and predict processes that regulates the marine environment and how it affects other components of the earth including man and other organisms.

2. Philosophy of the Programme
The vision of the Department of Marine Biology is to be leading institution in the training and developments of manpower in Marine Biology. On admission into the programme, students will be exposed to the various interrelated fields of Marine sciences. Thereafter, the student will focus on marine Biology. At this time, they will be suitably equipped to appreciate the interactions, dynamics and complexities of marine systems. The department will therefore build and sustain academic excellence in marine biology and capacity development to meet national economic needs.

3. Objectives of the Programme
Our charge is to create an enabling environment for marine biological activities to thrive thereby encourage collaboration with Research Institutions, Fisheries Departments, Oil and Gas Industries and International Development Agencies. Graduate of this programme will find ready employment in national and international agencies with interest in the marine environment, regulatory and monitory establishments, teaching and research institutions.
